In the 1980s, the CSD and the DR decided to procure dual-system locomotives in order to simplify the constantly growing traffic and operating procedures in cross-border traffic on the Berlin-Dresden-Prague route.
The expansion of the Decín-Prague line to a maximum speed of 160 km/h made it necessary to upgrade some locomotives. From 1994, six Czech Rh 372 locomotives were adapted for faster international passenger services and have since been operating under the class designation 371 - "Turbobastard". CD relocated the converted locomotives to the Prague depot.
