For use on the French DC network, the French state railroads procured a total of 237 locomotives of the BB 7200 multi-purpose locomotive from 1976. The design of the locomotives with the so-called "nez cassé" (broken nose) was created by the Frenchman Paul Arzens. Some locomotives had special buffers for towing the "Talgo III RD" trains with gauge change capability. The buffer body was painted red for identification.
