Arnold model railroads: A pioneer in N and TT scale.

Arnold, a company rich in tradition in the field of model railroads, has made a name for itself through innovation and precision. Founded on October 4, 1906 by Karl Arnold in Nuremberg, the company initially began with the production of tin toys, including boats and doll's houses. However, after the Second World War and the increasing competition in this market segment, Arnold refocused and devoted itself to the production of model trains. This reorientation was to make the company one of the leading manufacturers in the world of model railways. Alongside Tillig and Piko, Arnold is now one of the major manufacturers in the model railroad sector. Arnold's product portfolio ranges from diesel locomotives and freight wagons to passenger cars, which are mainly offered in N scale.

The history of Arnold model railways

After the reconstruction of the production facilities, which had been destroyed during the war, Arnold presented model railroads in 8 mm gauge for the first time at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in 1960 under the name "Arnold Rapido 200". These 1:200 scale models laid the foundation for a new era. As early as 1962, the company switched to the 1:160 scale with 9 mm track gauge, which led to the introduction of the internationally recognized "N gauge". From 1960 to 1962, the small "Rapido 200" trains supplemented the range before Arnold concentrated fully on the production of model railroads. Particularly noteworthy is the development of the "Rapido coupler", which was later adopted as the European standard for N gauge. In addition, from 1966 Arnold switched its production to standardized polarity, which further increased the reliability and compatibility of the model trains.

Expansion of the Arnold product range and takeovers

In the 1990s, Arnold expanded its range to include TT gauge models in order to gain a foothold in this growing market segment. In addition to electric locomotives and railcars, the range also included numerous accessories such as tracks, buildings and stations. Arnold impressed with the highest precision and accuracy of scale, which made the models very popular with collectors and model railroad enthusiasts. In 1995, Arnold was taken over by Rivarossi and in 2004 by Hornby, a British model train manufacturer, which has been selling the traditional manufacturer again since 2006. Under Hornby's leadership, numerous Arnold models were revised and new models were introduced, further enriching the range.
