Description

Bemo 1759176 electric locomotive Ge 4/4 III 644, RhB, Ep. VI (digital+Sound) Product Details

The RhB ordered nine powerful locomotives from SLM in order to counter the shortage of locomotives, especially during the peak season. Building on the experience gained with the SBB's Re 450 and Re 460, the latest locomotive technology was integrated into the Ge 4/4 III 641-649: radially adjustable wheelsets in the track curve, state-of-the-art inverter and three-phase current technology as well as ergonomically designed controls. In the winter of 93/94, the first of the 100 km/h machines with 3400 HP arrived. Three more 650-652 locomotives were purchased in 1999. The Ge 4/4 8003, which was taken over from the DC-operated MOB in 2019, has not yet been refurbished for RhB operation. After a few years of operation, the angular high-performance locomotives began to be rented out as advertising media and provided with colorful advertising inscriptions - also on their own behalf.

The locomotives are mainly used on the Albula line to haul the Albula articulated trains (AGZ), but also in front of car trains in the Vereina Tunnel.

On the afternoon of October 29, 2022, the longest narrow-gauge passenger train in the world ran on the 24.93 km UNESCO World Heritage route from the Albula Tunnel in Preda at 1788 m above sea level to the Landwasser Viaduct shortly after Filisur over a difference in altitude of around 790 m. The 1906 m long record train weighing around 2990 tons - made up of 25 four-carriage "Capricorn" trains manufactured by Stadler Rail - successfully reached its destination at a speed of between 30 and 35 km/h over 48 bridges and through 22 tunnels, crossing the Landwasser Viaduct.

The success of the world record was officially confirmed on site by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™. The entry reads: "longest narrow gauge passenger train". After the event, which was attended by several thousand guests and railroad fans along the route, the address of the locomotive promoting the event, Ge 4/4 III 644, was changed from world record attempt to world record journey.
