Description

Brawa 46466 5er Set passenger car 'Rheingold', DRG, Ep.II, m. Beleuchtung, DC-Digital Product Details

On their way to Switzerland and on to Italy, numerous luxury travelers from Great Britain and the Netherlands used CIWL sleeping cars through France. The DRG was very interested in "diverting" this wealthy clientele to its routes. Therefore, in 1928, it introduced a luxury day train called the "Rheingold Express" between Hoek van Holland/Amsterdam and Basel SBB. From 1929, the train run was extended to Lucerne and Zurich in the summer. The extent of the competitive pressure can be seen from the fact that CIWL responded to the DRG offensive with its own daily train via Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg, the "Edelweiss" as late as 1928.

The DRG based the design of the train on similar day trains of the CIWL. Inside, there were open large compartments and some half compartments, in first class even with loose armchairs. Each car had a different decor of various precious woods or cloth-covered walls and ceilings. Externally, the train wore a special dark purple-ivory paint scheme.

This resulted in 26 cars of four different types (each 1st and 2nd class with and without kitchen), as well as three baggage cars. A train usually consisted of five cars - one each with and without kitchen first and second class (one kitchen supplied two cars) and one baggage car. Since the baggage car still had to run behind the locomotive as a protection car at that time, the need for an additional baggage car arose due to the head making in Mannheim. The DRG repainted two Prussian and two Baden cars to match the Rheingold scheme. Traction in the Netherlands was provided by the 3700 and 3900 series, while the German section was operated for many years by the class 184-5 of the Mainz depot up to Mannheim. From 1936, the new Deutzerfeld 01s took over the Rheingold Express. On the southern section, the train is hauled by Offenburg 183s, which are replaced by BR 01s as early as 1930. From Basel, Ae 4/7s take the train to Central Switzerland in summer. With the start of the war in 1939, the luxury train is discontinued without replacement.

The BRAWA models of the BR 01 express locomotive are faithful reproductions of the original and are elaborately designed with many details. For example, the boiler, the cab, and the tender are finely detailed plastic components and even the back of the stab boiler is faithfully reproduced. The openwork ingot frame and the spoked wheels are made of die-cast zinc. Numerous parts are separately applied - e.g. pipes, steps and treads. Depending on the motorization and equipment version, the BRAWA BR 01 express locomotives are available either with a smoke generator and sound decoder or they are prepared for retrofitting them.
