Description

Brawa 49433 Freight Train Baggage Car Pwg, BBÖ, Class III Product Details

About the Model: The BBÖ Pwg freight train baggage car is a highly detailed H0-scale model from BRAWA. In addition to its true-to-life appearance, the car boasts additional features, such as continuous and separate running boards, gas or electric lighting, and brake shoes at wheel level. Furthermore, the model has already been marked with the road number "75 033."

About the Prototype: Until the 1920s, freight trains operated by all German railway administrations were braked manually. The train crew therefore included, in addition to the locomotive crew, a train conductor as the highest authority, a cargo master, a train attendant, and a shunter, as well as several brakemen. The brakemen were responsible for braking the train, performing shunting duties during stops along the route, and handling the exchange and processing of freight documents for the cargo being transported. For this purpose, a service car was coupled behind the locomotive, which served as a mobile workspace and living quarters. Only the brakemen were required to take their seats in one of the brakeman’s cabs while the train was in motion. As the culmination of its own development, the KPEV first procured Pwg cars based on design sheet pr IIa13a in 1913–14. After the end of World War I, this design was chosen to replace the old or missing service cars of most German state railways. Thus, from the second revised edition of the design specification until 1929, over 7,000 Pwg cars were built and became widespread not only in the former KPEV territory but also in Baden, Bavaria, Württemberg, and Saxony. Allegedly due to an attempted robbery on a train, the DRB removed the continuous running boards and handrails starting in the late 1930s. Further modifications made before the war began included reinforcing the car body frame and removing the window in the cargo door.
