Historical background
Between 1957 and 1966, Friedrich Krupp Maschinenfabriken AG produced a total of 15 units of the St 309a low loader wagon for the German Federal Railroad. These vehicles were optimized for compact heavy-duty transport and were characterized by their robust, minimalist design. The lack of an air brake was due to the design, which meant that only one set of wheels could be locked using a handbrake. Some examples were also taken over by the Dutch state railroads. The last wagons were only retired from the DB AG fleet in 2004 - proof of their longevity.
