Technically compact, visually striking

The car has a length over buffers of 140 mm and is equipped with NEM-compliant close-coupling mechanism. The prototype – Krupp Type St 309a low-bed car

Between 1957 and 1966, Friedrich Krupp Maschinenfabriken AG built a total of 15 of these compact low-bed cars for the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Five identical cars were delivered to the Dutch NS starting in 1962. The cars were designed for transporting small but heavy cargo and could carry a payload of up to 21 metric tons with a curb weight of about 15 metric tons. Due to the compact frame design, an air brake was not installed—instead, a wheel set was secured using a hand brake.

The cars used by the NS were primarily employed in factory and industrial transport, but also appeared in cross-border traffic with Germany. Their low height and load-carrying capacity made them ideal for transporting machinery, castings, or other heavy loads.
