The ESU 31417 Era IV diesel locomotive 261 660 is a faithfully reproduced model in H0 scale. This Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) diesel shunting locomotive is characterized by its classic red paint scheme and modern equipment. Developed for flexible use on both direct current and alternating current systems, this locomotive offers demanding model railroad fans many special features in both the technical and visual areas and impresses with prototypical sound and smoke effects.

The prototype of the 261 660 - shunting power in DB service

The 261 series, originally developed as the V60 series, was created as part of the DB programme in the 1950s to modernize shunting operations. It was equipped with coupling rods and a blind shaft to ensure both maneuverability and stability in shunting operations. With a top speed of 60 km/h, the V60 was ideal for branch lines and heavy shunting tasks. The series was also divided internally into heavy and light versions - the heavier version, the 261, is characterized by a reinforced frame and a higher weight of 54 tonnes.

A number of modifications were made over the years, including the replacement of the coal-fired holding furnaces and the installation of induction magnets in the 1960s. In the 1980s, automatic clutches were integrated to further increase efficiency. The series designation was changed to 360 and 361 in 1987, and from 1992 the 261 received a modern Caterpillar engine, making it the 362 and 363 series.
