ESU 31761 H0 Diesel locomotive V100 (class 110), 110 243, DR, ep. IV, DC+AC with sound
The ESU 31761 shows the diesel locomotive 110 243 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era IV and reproduces the prototype condition around 1971. The model is designed for the H0 scale and has the classic old red paint scheme. As a representative of the class 110, this locomotive stands for the beginning of large-scale diesel traction at the DR and for the gradual farewell to the steam locomotive in mainline and branch line service.
The development of the V100 began in the early 1960s after it became apparent that there was a lack of a powerful mainline diesel locomotive between the V60 and V180 series. Using numerous components from both types, VEB Lokomotivbau "Karl Marx" and Elektrotechnische Werke "Hans Beimler" jointly developed the V100, whose type designation indicated an output of around 1000 hp. From 1965, three pre-series locomotives were initially delivered before series production began in 1966. With a total of 869 units built, the V100 became the DR's most-built mainline diesel locomotive.
The class 110 in era IV
With the introduction of the EDP-compliant series designations in 1969, the V100 became the 110 series. Technical enhancements to the 12 KVD 18/21 twelve-cylinder engine, in particular through intercooling, significantly increased performance and reliability. The final expansion stage reached 1100 kW and made the series a versatile locomotive for passenger, freight and transfer services.
The 110 243 is an example of this phase of use in the early 1970s. In its old red livery, it could be found in mainline and branch line service as well as in front of freight trains or on transfer runs. The model convincingly captures this typical DR everyday life of Era IV.
Prototypical implementation and the finest details
ESU has also attached great importance to the exact implementation of the prototype details in this variant. The two separately controlled traction motor fans in the original are also independently motor-driven in the model. The work of the fan wheels can be observed through the filigree, multi-part fan grilles, acoustically supported by the appropriate sound functions.
The running gear is particularly detailed with deeply engraved bogie covers, real springs and differently designed areas underneath the frame. These fine details highlight the differences within the locomotive family and ensure a particularly realistic overall impression.
High-end technology and sound from ESU
The model is equipped with a LokSound 5 decoder and supports DCC, Motorola®, M4 and Selectrix. Thanks to universal electronics with plug-in slider and slide switch, the locomotive can be used in both two-wire and center conductor operation. Independent log-on to control centers with RailComPlus® or mfx® considerably increases operating convenience.
A powerful bell-type armature motor with flywheel mass drives all four axles via cardan and worm gears, supported by two traction tires. A PowerPack storage capacitor ensures an uninterrupted power supply. The high-quality loudspeaker with large sound capsule and passive radiator delivers a powerful, clear sound from the faithfully digitized 12 KVD 18/21 diesel engine.
Smoke, light and additional functions
A switchable smoke generator with synchronized smoke emission enhances the realistic impression. Extensive lighting functions such as light changes depending on the direction of travel, headlights that can be switched off, cab and driver's desk lighting as well as typical reflectors of the lower headlights are implemented in a prototypical manner. Additional effects such as brake sparks and squealing noises when cornering slowly round off the functional package.
Digital couplers at both ends, spring-loaded buffers and numerous separately applied grab rails and partially openwork steps are also included. The magnetically held roof of the driver's cab is removable and provides a view of the finely detailed, multi-colored interior with driver figure.
Use in H0 gauge
With a minimum passable radius of 360 mm, the locomotive is also suitable for more compact layouts. It is ideal for passenger, freight and transfer services of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era IV and is impressive both in prototypical operation and as a high-quality collector's model.
The ESU 31761 combines the latest digital technology with an extremely detailed realization of the DR class 110 and is therefore an excellent choice for demanding model railroaders with a focus on the German Reichsbahn.
