Prototype from modern construction site logistics

The prototype for this car arose from a very specific need. To transport heavy bulk-cargo containers, the freight car leasing company AAE—which is now part of VTG—required high-performance four-axle container carrier cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons. The existing 60-foot Sgns 60 units were only partially suitable for this purpose, as the center loading position would have remained unused when loaded with spoil skips.

For this reason, it was decided to shorten older Sgns 60 cars and put them back into service as Sgmmns 173 with a usable length of 40 feet. These cars could be used flexibly and, depending on the need, could accommodate either a 40-foot or 30-foot container or two 20-foot containers. The new cars were initially used for construction site logistics related to the Stuttgart 21 project. Trains transported the excavated material to destinations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. This area of operation makes the car an exciting example of modern freight transport.
