To transport heavy bulk cargo containers, the freight car leasing company AAE—which is now part of VTG—required four-axle container carrier cars with a load capacity of 70 metric tons. With the existing 60-foot Sgns 60 units in the fleet, the center loading position would have had to remain unoccupied when loading with spoil skips. Therefore, it was decided to shorten older Sgns 60 units and return them to service as Sgmmns 173 with a useful length of only 40 feet.

The four-axle cars can each carry one 40-foot or 30-foot container, or two 20-foot containers. This resulted in a particularly flexible car design for a variety of transport tasks. The new cars were initially used in construction site logistics around the Stuttgart 21 project. Trains transported the excavated material to locations including Amsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. This area of application clearly demonstrates how closely the car is linked to modern large-scale projects and current logistics.
