The steam locomotives, known as "Jumbo" because of their tractive power, were used with great success in almost all of Germany as well as in many other European countries. The maximum speed was 80 km/h forwards and 50 km/h in reverse. Some of these already very powerful locomotives saw a further increase in power to 2,100 hp (1,546 kW) when they were converted to oil firing from 1955 onwards. From 1968, the DB oil-fired locomotives had the class designation 043.
