Steam locomotive 86 049, DR, Era III: An impressive model from Fleischmann
The 86 049 steam locomotive from the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) is a detailed replica for model railway fans who value precision and historical authenticity. This model from Fleischmann impresses with a Next18 interface, LED headlights on both sides and filigree leading and trailing wheels with perforated spokes. With a length over buffers of 87 mm, the locomotive is perfect for use on N-gauge layouts representing Era III.
The prototype: The class 86 steam locomotive
The class 86 was built from 1928 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG) as a 1'D1' unit tender locomotive. These locomotives were extremely versatile and were mainly used on branch lines and in hilly terrain. Of the total of 775 locomotives built, 244 remained in the territory of the later GDR after the Second World War. Of these, 71 locomotives had to be handed over to the Soviet Union. At the beginning of the 1950s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn had 164 class 86s, which were mainly used in the Harz foreland, the Ore Mountains and Upper Lusatia.
The robust and powerful locomotives proved themselves in passenger and freight train service and were valued for their reliability. Their compact design made them ideal for use on winding lines with tight radii.
Fleischmann: Quality and precision
Fleischmann is known for its first-class model railroads, which impress with their high level of detail and technical sophistication. The 86 049 steam locomotive is a prime example of this quality. The fine leading and trailing wheels with openwork spokes emphasize the attention to detail, while the maintenance-free bell-type armature motor ensures particularly smooth and even running. The Next18 interface enables simple digitization to equip the model with additional functions.
Technical details and functions
The model has been developed for N scale 1:160 and has a shaft coupling in accordance with NEM 355. With a minimum radius of 192 mm, the locomotive is also suitable for narrow track curves. The bell-type armature motor and the flywheel mass ensure excellent running characteristics, while the 2 headlights change depending on the direction of travel and are illuminated by long-life LEDs. The locomotive is equipped with four powered axles and one traction tire axle for optimum traction.
