Description

Lenz 40180-04 diesel locomotive BR218 217-8, DB, Ep. IV Product Details

Following the success of the V 200, a single-engine diesel locomotive was planned in the mid-1950s to replace the still numerous steam locomotives of the 03, 23, 38 and 50 series on non-electrified lines. The nine pre-production models manufactured by Krupp still had a rounded front (which earned the locomotive the nickname "Lollo"), which was replaced in series production by the angular shape, which was easier and cheaper to manufacture. The V 160 was powered by a 1,900 hp 16-cylinder Mercdes-Benz or Maybach engine. From 1964, the V 160s built by Krupp, Henschel, KHD, Krauss-Maffei and MaK were in service.

With more than 800 units, the V 160 series is one of the most widely used DB mainline diesel locomotives. The V 160 family includes the 215 to 219, 225 and 226 series, which were used in simple branch line and regional services as well as in front of freight trains, express trains and intercity trains. The 218 series is the latest development of the V 160 family. It has electric train heating and a 2500 to 2800 hp engine, which made the auxiliary diesel of the heating generator superfluous. Train heating and reversing train control finally made the 218 a universal locomotive for passenger and freight services, some of which are still in use today.
