Description

Liliput L265245 N Heavy-Duty Freight Car, SSy 55, USATC, Loaded with Boilers, Era III Product Details

Liliput L265245 N Heavy-Duty Freight Car SSy 55 "USATC": Era III Heavy-Duty Freight Car

The Liliput L265245 N Heavy-Duty Freight Car SSy 55 "USATC" is a highly detailed replica of a historic bogie flat car, originally developed by the United States Army Transportation Corps (USATC) and later adopted by the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB). With its weathered Kessel cargo, the included crossing plates, and high-quality craftsmanship, this heavy-duty flatcar is an excellent addition to Era III model railroads.

The Prototype: USATC SSy 55 Heavy-Duty Flatcar

After World War II, numerous U.S. military transport cars remained in Europe and continued to be used by various European railroads. One of these cars was the SSy 55 model, which was originally developed for transporting tanks, heavy machinery, and other bulky loads.

The cars were later retired by the German Federal Railroad (DB) and used for civilian heavy-haul transport. Their robust plank floor without stanchions allowed for flexible loading, while the Minden-Dorstfeld DB 931 bogies ensured high load-bearing capacity and excellent running characteristics. The variant shown here, with the road number 554 689, was in service in 1958 and was used to transport large components such as boilers and machine parts.

Era III: The Era of Reconstruction

Era III (1945–1970) was marked by the reconstruction of European railways and the modernization of the rail network. During this period, many former military vehicles were integrated into civilian rail transport. The SSy 55 cars played a crucial role in the growing heavy-haul traffic of the Deutsche Bundesbahn.

Liliput: Precision and Attention to Detail

The manufacturer Liliput is known for high-quality model replicas featuring exquisite printing, precise engravings, and authentic functionality. The SSy 55 car impresses with its faithful reproduction of the bogie, the wooden floor, and the unloading mechanisms. The included crossing plates enable a realistic depiction of heavy-haul transport.

Technical Features and Functionality

The car has a length over buffers of 67.5 mm and is equipped with a NEM 355 coupler mount as well as close-coupling kinematics. These ensure a secure connection with other cars and smooth operation.

The detailed reproduction of the plank floor without stanchions ensures a realistic appearance, while the included crossing plates allow for the realistic positioning of military vehicles or heavy machinery on the car. The weathered boiler on the loading platform underscores the realistic appearance.

Design and Color Scheme

The car features the classic brown color scheme of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, with precise printing and the road number 554 689. The realistic reproduction of bolted joints, bracing, and loading areas makes this heavy-duty car a real eye-catcher on any model railroad layout.

Possible Uses on the Model Railroad Layout

The SSy 55 heavy-duty car is perfectly suited for heavy-duty and industrial trains, construction train formations, or military transports. It can be used as a single car with a load or in combination with other heavy-duty cars. This car really comes into its own, especially in freight yards, factory grounds, or loading stations.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure a long service life, the cars should be cleaned regularly. Dust can be carefully removed with a soft brush or compressed air spray. The axles and couplings should be checked occasionally and lubricated with special model train oil.

Conclusion: A must-have for heavy-haul fans

The Liliput L265245 N Heavy-Duty Freight Car SSy 55 "USATC" is an excellent choice for model railroaders who want to realistically recreate Era III heavy-duty freight traffic. With high-quality details, an aged coal load, and excellent running characteristics, this model is a valuable addition to any layout.
