Description

Märklin 88701 Z Dieseltriebwagen mit Steuerwagen, BR 628.2/928.2, DB, Ep. IV Product Details

Are you looking for a modern DB commuter railroad classic for your Z scale layout?

The Märklin 88701 Z Class 628.2/928.2, DB, Era IV diesel powered rail car with cab control car brings an important milestone in West German local and regional transportation to the Z scale. The prototype is a class 628.2 diesel railcar with a class 928.2 cab control car from the German Federal Railroad. It is depicted in the condition of Era IV in a mint turquoise/light gray paint scheme.

In the 1970s, the red rail buses still characterized local transport on many West German lines. Although these vehicles were quaint, they were already getting on in years. In order to remain attractive in competition with cars, the Bundesbahn was looking for a contemporary successor. In 1974, the first 628.0 series double railcars entered service. The single-engine prototypes of the 628.1 series built in 1981 also proved their worth. The series version finally followed in 1988/89 as the 628.2 series with 150 units in the DB fleet.

Prototype: 628.2 series with 928.2 driving trailer

The 628.2 series ushered in a new phase in local and regional transportation. Together with some federal states, which provided subsidies, modern local transport concepts were created that were considered pioneering achievements at the time and later served as a model for regional regular-interval services.

Compared to the old rail buses, the comfortable 628.2 was a significant step forward. The railcars even offered a 1st class compartment and became correspondingly popular with passengers. After a few years, most of the vehicles were given an improved interior with a wheelchair ramp and the new traffic red Regio livery. The 628.2s served reliably for more than a quarter of a century, sometimes in multiple traction.

Märklin 88701 Z Class 628.2/928.2 Diesel Railcar

The model consists of a class 628.2 diesel powered rail car and a class 928.2 cab control car. The powered rail car and cab control car are permanently coupled. The running gear is made of metal-filled plastic and the superstructure is made of plastic. Good tractive effort is achieved due to the high vehicle weight.

They are powered by a bell-type armature motor. Both bogies with all axles on the railcar are powered. This means that the model is technically designed for reliable operation in Z scale. The minimum passable radius is specified as R2.

Lighting, interior and detailing

The model has an LED headlight that changes over with the direction of travel with 3 x warm white and 2 x red. The driver's cabs are reproduced. The model also has a simulated interior with passenger compartment lighting.

A built-in buffer capacitor is also part of the equipment. The very high level of detail is evident in the fine and elaborate paint scheme and lettering. The mint turquoise/light grey color scheme underlines the Era IV character of the railcar and makes the model an eye-catching local transport vehicle for the Z-gauge layout.

Recommended purchase

If you are looking for a German Federal Railroad diesel powered rail car that embodies the dawn of a new era of mass transit, the Märklin 88701 Z class 628.2/928.2 diesel powered rail car is a very suitable choice.
