Mehlhose 210104002 H0 SPW-40 P2 Reconnaissance Armored Vehicle, New Turret with Machine Gun, NVA Product Details

SPW-40 P2 Reconnaissance Armored Vehicle with Turret and Cannon, NVA – Armored Reconnaissance of the GDR

The SPW-40 P2 reconnaissance armored vehicle is a faithful replica of one of the most important reconnaissance vehicles of the National People’s Army (NVA). Based on the Soviet BRDM-2, this armored 4x4 vehicle was exported to the GDR also exported to the GDR and designated there as the SPW-40 P2. With its distinctive turret—which has no hatch—and its heavy armament, it was an essential component of military reconnaissance and command units.

The Prototype: The BRDM-2 as the Base Vehicle

The BRDM-2 (Russian for “Armored Reconnaissance Patrol Vehicle”) was developed in the USSR in the early 1960s and produced in series from 1966 to 1987. It was created to replace the outdated BRDM-1 and offered numerous improvements over its predecessor. The more powerful engine, delivering up to 145 PS, gave the vehicle high speed and range. Its heavier armament—consisting of a 14.5-mm and a 7.62-mm machine gun—made it significantly more combat-effective. In addition, the BRDM-2 was equipped with a NBC protection system to make it more resistant to nuclear, biological, and chemical threats. Night vision devices and a modern navigation system significantly increased its tactical capabilities.

The BRDM-2 was exported to many “socialist” countries, including the GDR, where it was put into service as the SPW-40 P2. These vehicles were specially adapted to meet the needs of the National People’s Army and played a decisive role there.

The SPW-40 P2 in the NVA

In the NVA, the BRDM-2 was designated SPW-40 P2. The GDR variants were equipped with a V8 gasoline engine (GAZ-41) with water cooling and an output of 140 PS. With a top speed of up to 110 km/h on the road and an impressive range of up to 1,000 km, the vehicle could be deployed flexibly. The 290-liter fuel tank located in the rear of the hull contributed to its enormous range.

There were various special variants of the SPW-40 P2 in the NVA. The SPW-40 P2 K model was used as a platoon and company command vehicle. The SPW-40 P2 M/F version served as a signal and courier vehicle. Command vehicles without a turret were designated SPW-40 P2 UM. In addition, there were numerous other special versions for specific operational purposes.
