Piko 21783 H0 Electric Locomotive BR E17 123, DR, Ep. III, DC-Sound Product Details
Piko 21783 H0 Electric Locomotive Class E17 123 DR, Era III, DC-Sound
The Piko 21783 H0 E17 123 electric locomotive of the Deutsche Reichsbahn combines a distinctive Era III prototype with extensive digital sound features. The E17 123 was one of only two locomotives of this class that were acquired by the Deutsche Reichsbahn after World War II. After its return from the Soviet Union, it was put back into service in 1957 and subsequently operated on the electrified network in central Germany pulling passenger trains until 1968. Piko has produced this special version as an H0-scale model for the 2L DC system, featuring digital equipment and PIKO TrainSound.
E17 123 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era III
The prototype for the Piko 21783 is the Deutsche Reichsbahn’s E17 123. Its history after World War II makes this locomotive particularly notable within the class. Only two locomotives of this class were transferred to the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The E17 123 returned from the Soviet Union and was put back into service in 1957.
The locomotive remained in service on the electrified network in central Germany until 1968, where it was used to haul passenger trains. This clear association with the prototype makes the model particularly well-suited for corresponding Deutsche Reichsbahn passenger trains from Era III.
Original DRG lamp design and fine roof details
The Piko 21783 incorporates several characteristic details of the depicted E17 123. These include the original DRG headlight design, which defines the model’s appearance. This design is complemented by fine roof walkways.
The model also features additional specific characteristics in the roof area, including SBS 10 grooved insulators with a transverse axis. These details are part of the locomotive’s special design and complement the model’s H0-scale design.
Separately Molded Parts
In terms of detailing, the Piko 21783 features several separately molded parts. These include lubrication reservoirs, electrical sockets, handrails, and brake disc holders. These individually attached elements give the model a correspondingly finely crafted appearance.
Additionally, SIFA cables and windshield wipers in the DR style are included. In this way, the model incorporates further features of the locomotive it represents and faithfully recreates the E17 123 as it was configured for the Deutsche Reichsbahn during Era III.
Digital Sound Version with PIKO TrainSound
The Piko 21783 is available as a DC sound version. The model is digitally equipped and features sound. The sound system is specified as PIKO TrainSound. Thus, the locomotive combines the historical design of the E17 123 with modern digital equipment for model railroad operation.
PluX22 is used as the interface. The power system is 2L DC. The combination of digital control, sound, and the PluX22 interface forms a central component of this model variant’s technical features.
Digitally Controllable Cab and Engine Room Lighting
In addition to the sound features, the Piko 21783 offers additional lighting functions. Both the cab lighting and the engine room lighting are digitally controllable. This allows for targeted illumination of these areas of the model.
The standard lighting uses LED bulbs. Additionally, a red-to-white light cycle is included. Thus, the model combines multiple lighting functions with the digital sound system.
For use on an H0 layout
The length over buffers is 183 mm. The minimum curve radius is specified as 358 mm. These technical specifications can be taken into account when planning the locomotive’s use on an existing H0 layout.
Regarding the coupler system, the Piko 21783 features a NEM-compliant coupler box with KK kinematics. This clearly defines the coupler type and allows for its inclusion when assembling corresponding Era III passenger trains.
Special DR Electric Locomotive with Sound
The Piko 21783 combines the unique history of the E17 123 with detailed construction and digital sound technology. Original DRG lamp design, fine roof walkways, separate lubrication reservoirs, power outlets, handrails, and tail light holders are among the listed features, as are grooved insulators with SBS 10 transverse axles, SIFA cables, and DR-style windshield wipers.
With PIKO TrainSound, a PluX22 interface, digitally controllable cab and engine room lighting, and red-and-white LED light changes, the Piko 21783 offers a comprehensive set of features. The E17 123 thus adds a special electric locomotive with digital sound to the H0 fleet of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in Era III.
