What Is RegioJet?

RegioJet is a private Czech transport company operating railway and long-distance coach services. Regular commercial railway services began in 2011. The brand became especially well known for its yellow trains, reservable seats, different comfort levels and international connections across Central Europe.

RegioJet is particularly interesting for model railway enthusiasts because its trains represent modern European railway operation. Multi-system locomotives, former coaches from several state railways, modernised passenger coaches and newer vehicle types create varied train formations. Despite their different origins, many formations appear as a coordinated fleet through their yellow, orange-yellow, grey and black liveries.

RegioJet belongs entirely to Era VI . Modern multi-system locomotives, international vehicle numbers, private transport companies, digital passenger information and cross-border train services are typical features of this era.

The current route network can change because of new timetables, transport contracts and seasonal services. A convincing Central European main line is therefore usually sufficient for a prototype-oriented layout. A station with Czech, Slovak, Austrian, Hungarian or Polish influences provides a suitable setting.

Which Vehicles Define the RegioJet Train Appearance?

RegioJet does not operate a completely uniform fleet consisting of only one locomotive and coach type. The combination of modern locomotives and different passenger-coach designs is precisely what makes the subject attractive for model railway layouts.

Siemens Vectron

Vectron locomotives are suitable for international routes using different power and train-protection systems. On a model railway, they are a good choice for long RegioJet services and modern electrified main lines.

Typical use

International passenger trains with yellow Eurofima and open-saloon coaches.

TRAXX Class 386

RegioJet locomotives of Class 386 are among the company's most distinctive prototypes. These multi-system locomotives can operate on international routes and carry the characteristic yellow corporate livery.

For model railway enthusiasts

Suitable for Roco and PIKO passenger coaches as well as complete starter sets.

TRAXX Class 388

PIKO offers the newer TRAXX generation in RegioJet and RegioJet Pool versions. Models are available in H0 and TT as analogue, digital and sound-equipped versions.

Technical tip

Check the electrical system, decoder, interface and minimum radius before purchasing.

Class 223 Diesel Locomotive

The blue-and-yellow diesel locomotive expands the RegioJet subject to routes without continuous overhead electrification. In TT it can convincingly haul a short passenger train, a transfer working or a replacement service.

Layout setting

Branch-line connection, border station or non-electrified section of railway.

Passenger Coaches

RegioJet uses or has used several types of long-distance coach. Compartment coaches, open-saloon coaches and Eurofima designs can therefore be combined in one model train, provided the livery and represented period are compatible.

Presentation

Interior lighting and seated passengers enhance the effect of a train standing in a station.

Double-Deck and Regional Coaches

Not every RegioJet vehicle is yellow. Tillig offers red double-deck coaches for regional services. These vehicles should not be placed randomly in a classic yellow long-distance train, but should form a separate regional-transport subject.

Important distinction

Represent yellow long-distance trains and red double-deck formations separately.

H0, TT and N gauge

In Which Gauges Are RegioJet Models Available?

Gauge Scale RegioJet Selection Suitable Layout Concept Planning Advice
H0 1:87 Vectron, Classes 386 and 388, passenger coaches, coach sets and a digital starter set. International main line with large stations and long-distance trains. Passenger coaches are long; generous curves and sufficiently long platforms create a better appearance.
TT 1:120 Class 223, Classes 386 and 388, several long-distance coaches and double-deck coaches. Central European long-distance and regional traffic within a compact area. Many coaches are approximately 220 to 223 mm long and require sufficiently large curve radii.
N 1:160 Earlier models included diesel multiple units and Eurofima coach sets. Long international trains on a smaller baseboard. Check current reissues and available versions before planning a complete train.
Z 1:220 No extensive RegioJet range is currently represented in the checked shop selection. Modern European long-distance railway using neutral vehicles. Individual conversions and custom lettering require experience.
0 / 1 / G varies No regular RegioJet product range in the current shop selection. Individual models or custom-built display pieces. Calculate the cost and effort of a custom model realistically.

How Do You Build a RegioJet Model Train?

A convincing RegioJet train does not immediately need eight or ten coaches. The important factors are a suitable locomotive, compatible coaches, a sufficiently long station and a recognisable operational purpose.

Compact Beginner's Train

A Class 386 electric locomotive or a Vectron with two or three yellow coaches already creates a clearly recognisable RegioJet formation. This length is suitable for starter sets, temporary floor layouts and smaller home railways.

  • one yellow electric locomotive,
  • two coaches of different designs,
  • a platform at least as long as the train,
  • overhead-line masts or visible catenary.

Prototypical Long-Distance Train

On a larger H0 or TT layout, the train can be extended to five to eight coaches. Different window arrangements are realistic because RegioJet uses several coach types. Repeated use of the same running number should be avoided where possible.

  • a Vectron or TRAXX locomotive,
  • compartment, open-saloon and Eurofima coaches,
  • different running numbers,
  • interior lighting for station scenes.

RegioJet Pool Locomotive

Models carrying the inscription “RegioJet Pool” can be used in front of a RegioJet passenger train. Depending on the prototype represented, temporary operation with other suitable coaches may also be possible. A complete yellow RegioJet train nevertheless creates the most consistent appearance on a themed layout.

Red Double-Deck Train

The red TT double-deck coaches form a separate regional subject. Such a train should consist of several matching double-deck vehicles. Mixing individual red coaches with yellow long-distance coaches would only be appropriate for a specifically documented exceptional formation.

Questions and easy-to-understand answers

Frequently Asked Questions About RegioJet Model Trains

Is RegioJet the Same as Railjet?

No. RegioJet is a private Czech transport company. Railjet is a family of long-distance trains primarily associated with the Austrian Federal Railways. The similar-sounding names refer to different companies and train concepts.

Which Model Railway Era Does RegioJet Belong To?

RegioJet belongs to Era VI, which begins in 2007. Private railway companies, international multi-system locomotives, modern vehicle numbers and cross-border long-distance services clearly belong to this present-day era.

Which Locomotive Suits RegioJet Coaches?

Yellow Vectron locomotives and TRAXX Classes 386 and 388 are particularly suitable. In TT, Class 223 can additionally be used on non-electrified routes. The exact combination should match the period being represented.

Why Do RegioJet Coaches Look Different?

The coaches originate from different vehicle families and some were acquired from other railways or modernised. Compartment, open-saloon and Eurofima coaches can therefore have different windows, doors and roof designs despite carrying the same general livery.

How Many Coaches Does a RegioJet Model Train Need?

Two or three coaches are sufficient for a small layout. A prototype-oriented long-distance train may consist of five to eight or more coaches. Platform length, visible curve radii, locomotive performance and available storage tracks are decisive.

Are RegioJet Models Available for H0 AC?

Yes. PIKO and Roco offer selected Vectron and TRAXX locomotives as digital centre-contact models. Passenger coaches can also be used on Märklin-compatible track after checking or replacing their wheelsets where necessary.

Do Red RegioJet Double-Deck Coaches Suit Yellow Long-Distance Coaches?

The two colour schemes should normally be represented separately. The red double-deck coaches belong to a regional-transport subject, while the yellow coaches represent the better-known long-distance services.

Is Interior Lighting Worthwhile in RegioJet Coaches?

Yes, especially in modern stations, overnight trains and evening layout scenes. Before retrofitting, check the suitable lighting kit, current collection, decoder and options for flicker-free operation.

Can a RegioJet Train Run on a German-Themed Layout?

It is convincing on an internationally themed Era VI layout. A border station, diverted service, international main line or fictional future service provides a suitable explanation. For strict prototype accuracy, research a specific route and represented year.
