Its main task was to replace the obsolete steam locomotives on the main lines. For this purpose, the 1040s were used to haul express and freight trains, although the express train traffic caused too much strain on the engines in the long run. The locomotives were in service from 1950 to 2003 and were an important part of Austrian rail traffic.
