The new 1040 007-5 of the ÖBB from Rivarossi

After the Second World War, the re-established Austrian Federal Railways carried out an extensive electrification program. This led to the construction of the 1040 series, which was designed on the basis of the 1045, 1145 and 1245 series. The result was Austria's first post-war locomotive.

The locomotives were initially used to haul express and freight trains, but the former was too demanding for the engines in the long term. They were later forced out of express train service and moved into subordinate services. It was not until 2003 that the last locomotives of the 1040 series were taken out of service.

The new Rivarossi models HR2939/S (1040.10) and HR2940/S (1040 007-5) are partially redesigned and now have the multi-nozzle ventilation grilles in their side walls that the 1040.07, 1040.10 and 1040.15 locomotives had. The new model is powered by a slant-grooved five-pole motor with flywheels on all four axles. This ensures the best driving characteristics. Also on board are a digital interface in accordance with NEM 662 (Next-18), current pick-up contacts on all eight wheels, sprung metal buffers, sturdy yet delicate pantographs and attached metal grab rails. The Sécheron spring drive is also engraved on the wheel disks in keeping with the prototype. The HR2940S sound version is supplied with a ZIMO sound decoder. The sounds were created especially for Rivarossi from unique sound recordings of the ÖBB 1040 series.
