A dense network of so-called "secondary railroads" was created in Austria as part of the expansion of remote rural areas. The Rh 85 was specially designed for these local railroads - compact, reliable and powerful enough for passenger and freight trains on branch lines. It connected remote villages with the main network and was a familiar sight on Austria's tracks for decades.
