About the prototype: Starting in 1971, the German Federal Railroad put 398 class 218 production locomotives into service and used them in front of both passenger and freight trains. The first 218s were still delivered in the purple-red color scheme that was common for diesel locomotives. From 1975, the colors ocean blue/beige determined the external appearance of the locomotives.
