The class 217 was developed from the mid-1960s as a more powerful variant of the V160 family. Its purpose: to haul heavy reversible trains with electric train heating on non-electrified lines. The total of 15 machines built represented the link to the later 218 series and are regarded as technical milestones of diesel traction at DB. The 217 003 shown here is one of the three prototypes of the series.

Three axles are driven, two of them with traction tires for optimum tractive power. The locomotive is equipped with a flywheel and can easily negotiate radii from 358 mm. Wheel sets with 1.2 mm high wheel flanges are available as spare parts (item no. 145433, 145435) if an alternative use is required.
