Roco 73825 electric locomotive Re 4/4 169, BLS Ep. IV

After the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon Railway's Ae 4/4 locomotives, which had been in operation since 1944, had proven themselves successfully for over two decades, it was time to replace other older mainline locomotives in the early 1960s. While SBB aimed to procure Re 4/4ˡˡ with classic direct control and single-phase AC motors, BLS opted for more modern technology with silicon rectifiers and shaft current motors. These locomotives, initially classified as Ae 4/4ˡˡ and then as Re 4/4 after technical improvements, were built by SLM and BBC and used for both passenger and freight services on the BLS, GBS, SEZ and BN networks as well as the adjacent SBB lines.
