Technical foresight: BLS's modern answer

To replace older locomotives, BLS procured modern machines with innovative technology in the early 1960s: silicon rectifiers instead of classic direct control, shaft current motors instead of conventional single-phase motors. Built by SLM and BBC, the Re 4/4s proved themselves on the entire BLS network - in passenger and freight traffic, including on GBS, SEZ, BN and SBB lines.
