Description

Roco 78063 electric locomotive E 52 03, DB, Ep. III Product Details

The DRG procured a heavy electric locomotive to haul long passenger trains on the electrified Bavarian main lines. From numerous designs, a decision was made in favor of a 2'BB2' locomotive that was to have the same engines as the BR E 91 freight locomotive that was also planned. In this new design, the DRG abandoned the previous design of electric locomotives with a slow-running large engine and opted for four smaller electric motors. Each power unit group has two motors. A countershaft drives a jackshaft via inclined crankshafts, which is coupled to two driving axles by coupling rods. The locomotive, which at 140 t is one of the heaviest electric locomotives ever built in Germany, had an output of 2,200 kW and a top speed of 90 km/h.

The manufacturers delivered the locomotives in 1924 /1925 to the DRG's Bavarian Group Administration, which put them into service as class EP 5 with the numbers 21 501-535. In 1927, they were given the designation E 52 01-35. The 29 examples that remained with the Bundesbahn after the war were designated BR 152 from 1968. In February 1973, the DB retired the last representative of this class, the 152 014.
