Developed as part of the new construction program from 1951, they proved their worth particularly in commuter service. Locomotive 65 1073-9 embodies the modernized state from 1975: with Giesl ejector, wet steam regulator and new boiler feed lines - typical for the last decade of use of this series.

With 88 machines built, the series was widely used. It was characterized by good acceleration, high load capacity and its characteristic appearance. They were in active service until the end of the 1970s before they were gradually replaced by more modern traction units.
