Brawa 50049 Leichtbaukesselwagen Uerdingen Z [P], DR, Ep.III Product Details
About the model: The DR lightweight tank car Uerdingen Z [P] is characterized above all by a detailed paint scheme with the finest printing. It was produced with great attention to detail, which can be seen, among other things, in the many extra details and the free-standing handle bars. The car has a length of 101.1 mm and has close coupling kinematics. All of this rounds off the overall appearance of the wagon and makes it a beautiful addition to your layout.
About the prototype: 30 m³ Uerdingen type lead tank car: The general technical progress in lightweight construction and welding technology gave those responsible at the Reichsbahn the idea of dispensing with the actual vehicle frame when designing new tank cars. Instead, the tractive and impact forces were to be absorbed as far as possible via the tank. By making extensive use of welding technology, it was hoped to reduce raw material requirements and manufacturing costs while at the same time obtaining more robust vehicles. For this reason, Waggonfabrik Uerdingen received an order in 1938 to develop a lightweight tank wagon with a loading volume of 30 m³. As early as 1939, the three prototypes were handed over to two private freight car rental companies and the state economic research company (Wifo) for testing. After a small interim series in 1940, series production of the 30 m³ Uerdingen-type lead tank wagons began in 1941. The largest customer was the Luftwaffe with around 2,200 units, followed by the Wifo and many smaller companies, so that a total of around 3,700 wagons were built. In the post-war period, the Wifo and Luftwaffe wagons were distributed to other wagon manufacturers in both German states. The wagons were primarily used by larger companies in the mineral oil industry, but also by smaller private companies as well as DB and DR themselves in the following decades. Some of the wagons also remained abroad and were used there by new owners. One wagon could still be found in internal works traffic at Haltermann in Hamburg in 2016.
