Brawa 50681 Rheingold Express Train Set, 6 pieces, DRG, Era II: Luxury and elegance of the golden era of railroading
The Brawa 50681 Rheingold Express Train Set is a faithful reproduction of the legendary Rheingold Express of the German State Railroad Company (DRG) from Era II. This exclusive 6-piece set brings the luxury and elegance of the 1920s directly to your model railroad layout. The Rheingold Express was a luxury day train that was created in 1928 to transport wealthy travelers between Hoek van Holland, Amsterdam and Basel. The train impressed with its luxurious furnishings, elegant interior design and striking dark purple and ivory livery, which made it one of the most famous trains of its time.
Role model: The Rheingold Express - a train for discerning travelers
The Rheingold Express was introduced by the DRG in 1928 as a competitor to the luxury trains of the CIWL (Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits) in order to attract wealthy travelers to German routes. The train was particularly popular with travelers from Great Britain and the Netherlands, who passed through France on their way to Switzerland and Italy. To appeal to this clientele, the DRG offered a day train that impressed with its luxurious ambience and high-quality interior materials. The carriages had open-plan compartments and some half-compartments, with first class being equipped with loose armchairs and a particularly elegant interior. Each carriage was individually designed, with decors made of fine woods or fabric coverings that created a unique atmosphere.
The Rheingold Express initially ran from Hoek van Holland and Amsterdam to Basel, and was later extended to Lucerne and Zurich in the summer. On the Dutch section, the 3700 and 3900 series took over traction of the train, while in Germany the Class 184-5 of the Mainz depot was used as far as Mannheim. From 1936, the new BR 01 locomotives took over the train service. Ae 4/7 locomotives were used on the southern section in Switzerland. With the outbreak of World War II, the luxury train was discontinued in 1939.
Brawa model: High quality reproduction of the Rheingold train
The Brawa 50681 Rheingold express train set consists of six detailed replica cars modeled after the original train of 1928. The set includes first and second class cars with and without a kitchen as well as a baggage car that represent the typical train route of the Rheingold Express. The carriages are lavishly painted and printed, with the finest details that perfectly capture the luxurious character of the prototype. Each carriage is equipped with period-appropriate interior furnishings, allowing a realistic depiction of the luxury journeys of the time.
The dark purple and ivory paintwork of the train is a striking feature and underlines the special status of the Rheingold Express. The high-quality workmanship of the carriages can be seen in the finely crafted details such as the individually attached steps, the filigree wiring and the faithfully reproduced steps. Every detail has been carefully reproduced to meet the highest standards of model building quality.
Steam locomotive BR 01: The heart of the Rheingold Express
The steam locomotive BR 01, which pulled the Rheingold Express on the German section of the line, is also a true masterpiece. The model from Brawa is characterized by its high-precision replica and the finely detailed plastic components. The openwork ingot frame and the spoked wheels made of die-cast zinc provide a realistic look, while the drive in the tender ensures optimum running characteristics. The boiler, the driver's cab and the tender are modeled exactly on the prototype, including the standing boiler rear wall and the filigree printing.
The model is prepared with a smoke generator and a sound decoder, which can be optionally installed to further enhance the driving pleasure. The illuminated driver's cab and the period-appropriate lighting emphasize the model's attention to detail. The close coupling between the locomotive and tender ensures a prototypical representation and excellent running characteristics.

The Brawa 50681 Rheingold express train set is the ideal addition to any model railway layout that specializes in Era II. The set impresses with its exact reproduction of the famous luxury train and the high-quality workmanship of the individual cars. The combination of historical prototypes and state-of-the-art model building technology makes this set a worthwhile investment. Let the Rheingold Express run on your layout and experience the golden era of luxury travel up close.
