Description

Brawa 65151 passenger car Bmhe, DR, Ep.IV Product Details

About the model: The DR Bmhe passenger car is from Era IV and shines with a detailed look and selected features such as a multicolored painted interior. Furthermore, the car has already been prepared for retrofitting interior lighting. The model has a length of 165 mm and was assigned the road number "51 50 21-11 836-7".

About the prototype: Until 1977, the Halberstadt Raw produced over 3000 four-axle reconditioned cars for the DR, whose box length at that time was a concession to the structural conditions of the Raw. In the meantime, however, these cars were no longer up to date for commuter and local traffic and were no longer suitable for high-value operations. Since the GDR's wagon industry was fully occupied with export orders, only the Halberstadt works was considered for the construction of the new wagon. Because the facilities there had been expanded in the meantime, the new vehicle could now also make full use of the UIC dimension of 26.4 meters. A prototype car was therefore built as early as 1973, followed by a second one in 1975. Both were extensively tested in daily service. They were quickly given the name "Langer Halberstädter" (Long Halberstadt), which was certainly due to the famous sausages produced here. Even during the design phase, the DR demanded that the car should also be suitable for "high-quality international operations", which naturally led to compromises in the design. The result was a car with two entrances and three passenger compartments with a central aisle. At first glance, the Bmhe therefore appears to be a copy of the DB Silverlings, but it is more of a further development of the Bghwe cars, taking many new components into account. This is also evident in the tare weight, which at 39 t is quite high and thus did not correspond to the "world standard" so often aspired to in the GDR. The cars proved themselves in service and were perceived by passengers as progress. In accordance with the requirements when they were ordered, they were initially used almost exclusively in express trains on national and international routes. They also reached destinations in the CSSR, Poland and the FRG. The cars delivered from 1982 onward received the new green-ivory paint scheme for express train cars. Some cars that reinforced the city express trains received their orange-ivory color scheme. By 1983, a total of 1279 Bmhe cars had been built and registered under DOK number 2329. Starting in 1981, the DR tested the central power supply (ZEV) from the traction unit in ten cars. Cars equipped in this way bore the designation Bmhee. No major changes were made to the Bmh cars (the "e" was dropped in 1987) until 1989. Together with Reko and modernization cars, they thus formed the backbone of the DR's passenger and express train fleet for many years and shaped its train pattern.
