Description

Brawa 70044 steam locomotive BR 043 der DB, Ep. IV (analog) Product Details

About the model: The manufacturer BRAWA presents the DR class 043 steam locomotive, Era IV with the road number 043 666-7 BD Hannover; Bw Rheine. The prototypical model impresses with its detailed appearance and its period-appropriate features. The H0 locomotive has metal driving and coupling rods, a faithful reproduction of the standing boiler rear wall and has been prepared for retrofitting a smoke generator and locomotive sound.

About the prototype: The Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG) took a similar approach to the comparison of the 01 and 02 series when procuring standard freight locomotives. The specification for the new locomotive was to be able to haul freight trains weighing up to 1,200 tons over low mountain routes, with an axle pressure of 20 tons. The maximum speed was set at 70 km/h for the pre-series locomotives. To determine the more economical design, an order was placed with various locomotive manufacturers in 1926 for the construction of 10 locomotives each of the 43 series (two-cylinder engine) and 44 series (three-cylinder engine). In addition to assigning the locomotives to other railroad depots, a direct comparison was made between the 43 and 44 at the Pressig-Rothenkirchen depot. The advantages and disadvantages of each class could be tested in train haulage on the Frankenwaldbahn. The comparison of the two classes was initially to the disadvantage of the more powerful class 44. The economy of the two-cylinder locomotive 43 prevailed at that time. However, in the mid-1930s, after the global economic crisis had been overcome, the call for more powerful freight locomotives became louder. The experience gained ten years earlier with the 44 series was recalled, and with the experience gained from steam engine construction since 1925, an intermediate series was created with the 44 013-065 locomotives. In 1938 (from 44 066), proper series production was finally started. By 1949, a total of 1989 class 44 locomotives had been produced at various locomotive factories in Germany and abroad. The locomotives lived up to expectations and from then on were the backbone of freight train transportation.
