Electrotren HE2041 H0 Electric Locomotive 276-129, RENFE, Era IV
Are you looking for a classic Spanish electric locomotive that combines historical significance, distinctive roof details, and the unique character of the RENFE Class 276 on your H0 layout? The Electrotren HE2041 H0 Electric Locomotive 276-129, RENFE, Era IV is an expressive model for anyone who wants to authentically and impressively depict Spain’s electric rail operations during Era IV. The locomotive belongs to the RENFE Class 276, which also became known as “the French locomotives” and holds a special place in prototypical operations due to its development history and long service life.
This model is built in H0 scale and represents an electric locomotive of the RENFE railway company. With a length over buffers of 217 mm, the locomotive brings a prominent yet practical size to the layout. It is designed for the 2L DC system and, in this version, is specified as analog without digital or sound features. At the same time, it includes an MTC21 interface, making the model appealing to model railroaders who value a clearly defined technical foundation.
RENFE Class 276 with a French Development History
The RENFE Class 276 entered service between 1956 and 1965. It was developed by the French company Alsthom. The first 20 units were delivered as early as 1952 but could not be put into service until 1956, after the first electrification projects in Catalonia were completed. These locomotives were based on the SNCF CC 7100 series, giving the prototype an intriguing link between French locomotive technology and Spanish rail operations.
Originally, the locomotives bore the numbers 7601 through 7699 and 8601 through 8637. With the switch to UIC numbering, they were renumbered 276-001 through 276-099 and 276-101 through 276-137. One distinctive feature, however, remained: The locomotives always retained their original numbers on the front and on the illuminated nameplates on the sides. It is precisely these details that make the Class 276 so appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of Spanish railroad models.
Service and Paint Scheme of the Prototype
The Class 276 locomotives were assigned to the rail depots in Barcelona, Alcázar de San Juan, and Valencia. They were also in service on trains in Zaragoza and Santander. As a result, the series represents versatile electric rail transport within Spain and offers many possibilities for creating appropriate train and operational scenes on a model railroad layout.
The original green paint scheme was retained for almost the entire duration of their active service. Exceptions were units 7630, 7662, and 7666, which were converted for use on the Catalan Talgo line and temporarily received a red-and-silver paint scheme, which they later lost. Some locomotives were also slightly modernized and received the black-and-yellow color scheme that became known as “Taxi.”
Highly detailed electric locomotive for H0 DC operation
The Electrotren HE2041 impresses with its clear RENFE designation, its Era IV design, and its characteristic features. Particularly striking are the two different pantographs, as well as the multiple control system and the snow guards on the roof. These features give the model a distinctive technical appearance and make the locomotive interesting to look at even up close.
For operation, the model features LED lighting with a red-to-white color change. This gives the locomotive a harmonious visual effect as the direction of travel changes. The NEM-compliant coupler shaft with KK kinematics allows for seamless integration into compatible train sets and makes the model versatile for layout operation.
If you’d like to expand your H0 collection with a RENFE electric locomotive featuring a historical background, striking appearance, and interesting technical features, the Electrotren HE2041 H0 Electric Locomotive 276-129 is an excellent choice. Add this Spanish Era IV model to your layout and showcase a special piece of RENFE history in an impressive way.
