With the merger of Dutch freight transport with the German Railion Group, DB AG gained access to some of the NS 1600 series electric locomotives. In 2012, ten locomotives were painted traffic red as part of the maintenance work. On the initiative of some train drivers, the last three locomotives were painted with farewell texts for the end of their service at DB Cargo NL in 2020.
