With the introduction of the DB series scheme on January 1, 1968, the power cars of the VT 11.5 were renumbered to the BR 601, the middle cars to the BR 901. set up the intercity system as an urban rapid transit system with 1st class vehicles every two hours. On average, six units were used daily. After a conversion, this was followed from 1980, the system was used for special tourist services ("Alpen-See-Express"). Starting from Hamburg and Dortmund, the tourist trains ran to popular vacation regions in southern Germany and Austria.
