In the summer of 1990, shortly before reunification, the Deutsche Reichsbahn caused a sensation with the use of the former TEE diesel multiple unit VT 601 as the IC "Max Liebermann". The ten-car set ran between Hamburg and Berlin from August 1 to September 29, 1990 and was reminiscent of the famous "Flying Hamburger" of the 1930s.

The set includes a compartment car and three large-capacity cars in the matching design of the VT 601, as it was used by the DR in scheduled service in 1990.
