Fleischmann 7760019 N Akkutriebwagen BR 515 mit Steuerwagen DB Ep.IV Product Details

Fleischmann 7760019 N Battery-Powered BR 515 Railcar with DB Ep. IV Control Car – The Legendary “Akku-Blitz” of the Deutsche Bundesbahn

Are you looking for an exceptional railcar for your N-gauge model railroad layout that will allow you to authentically recreate the classic branch-line service of the Deutsche Bundesbahn? The Fleischmann 7760019 two-car battery-powered railcar set, featuring railcar 515 537 and a Series 815 control car, brings an interesting chapter of German railway history to your layout. Particularly appealing is the design featuring differently painted cars, an unobstructed view through the passenger compartment, and numerous separately attached details. With LED lighting, a flywheel, and a Next18 digital interface, this set is ideal for the varied passenger service of Era IV.

Prototype: The 515 Series – The Famous “Battery Blitz” of the Deutsche Bundesbahn

The history of German battery-powered railcars dates back to the period before World War I. Even then, electrically powered vehicles with batteries were being developed to make passenger service on less-traveled routes more economical. Among the best-known early vehicles were the two-car “Wittfeld” battery-powered railcars, whose batteries were housed in distinctive front extensions. After World War II, the German Federal Railroad (DB) also focused intensively on this type of propulsion. The first model to emerge was the ETA 176, which became known as the “Limburg Cigar” due to its distinctive shape. However, only eight units of this series were built. Starting in 1953, the more cost-effective ETA 150 followed, which went on to become the Deutsche Bundesbahn’s successful battery-powered railcar.

From the ETA 150 to the Class 515 – Cost-Effective Service on Branch Lines

Between 1953 and 1965, a total of 232 ETA 150-series battery-powered railcars were built. With the introduction of the new numbering system in 1968, they were designated as Class 515. In addition, the Deutsche Bundesbahn procured 216 control cars of the ESA 150 type, which were later designated as Class 815. The vehicles were particularly well-suited for passenger service on branch lines, as they drew their electrical power from onboard batteries and could therefore operate independently of overhead wires. The quiet electric drive and economical operation made the battery-powered railcars iconic vehicles of the Bundesbahn’s commuter service. Known by their nickname “Akku-Blitz,” they remain fondly remembered by many railroad enthusiasts to this day.

Two-car set with differently painted cars

The Fleischmann 7760019 depicts a classic Deutsche Bundesbahn battery-powered railcar set on a 1:160 scale. It consists of railcar 515 537 and a matching control car of the 815 series. A special feature is the design with differently painted cars, which gives the set a unique appearance. The models feature an interior with replicated driver’s cab areas. Particularly noteworthy is the unobstructed view through the passenger compartment, which creates a prototypical effect. Numerous separately attached plug-in parts complement the vehicles’ characteristic design. With a total length over the buffers of 293 mm, this creates an attractive two-car unit for classic branch lines of Era IV.

Model Technology & Next18 Digital Interface

The Fleischmann battery-powered railcar set is designed for analog DC operation. The motorized railcar features a flywheel drive system that promotes smooth running characteristics. Two axles are driven, with one axle equipped with traction tires. For future digitalization, the model features an electrical Next18 digital interface through which a suitable digital decoder can be retrofitted. The analog version is shipped without a factory-installed digital or sound decoder. Additionally, a Z21 driver’s cab is available for the model, which—when paired with the appropriate digital equipment and a compatible control system—offers an interesting option for prototypical operation.

LED Lighting & Prototype-Accurate Vehicle Details

The Fleischmann 7760019 features direction-dependent lighting with a white three-light headlight and two red tail lights. The LED technology complements the characteristic appearance of the battery-powered motorcar set and creates a harmonious effect while in motion. In particular, the combination of an unobstructed view through the passenger compartment, the existing interior furnishings, and separately attached details makes the model interesting even upon closer inspection. The NEM 355 coupler sockets with close-coupling kinematics round out the technical features. With a minimum radius of 192 mm, the two-car set can also be used on more compact N-gauge model railroad layouts.

Ideal for classic branch line service in Era IV

The Fleischmann BR 515 with control car 815 is ideal for model railroads focused on the Deutsche Bundesbahn and regional passenger service. The set looks particularly authentic on single-track branch lines with small stations, rural stops, and short platforms. Operation on tracks without overhead wires also perfectly matches the prototype of this battery-powered railcar. With the matching control car, you can recreate typical trips of a two-car commuter train set. Whether pulling into a small terminal station, traveling through tranquil countryside, or stopping at a rural platform—the Akku-Blitz brings an authentic Bundesbahn atmosphere to your N-gauge layout.

A Special Model for Collectors & Bundesbahn Enthusiasts

The Fleischmann 7760019 combines the fascinating development history of German battery-powered railcars with a finely detailed model design. The differently painted cars, the unobstructed view through the passenger compartment, and the technical features—including the Next18 digital interface—make this set an attractive addition for discerning N-gauge model railroading enthusiasts. The “Battery Blitz” is an especially interesting choice for collectors of classic railcars, enthusiasts of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, and model railroaders focusing on Era IV. Add the Fleischmann BR 515 with control car 815 to your model railroad layout and experience the unmistakable charm of historic branch-line rail service!
