Description

Kres 4911D railcar Gläserner Zug ex ET 9101,DB, Ep. IV (digital, without sound) Product Details

In the early 1930s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn commissioned five special observation railcars, which were specially designed to provide a good view from all seats. Two of these railcars were designed for electric operation, while the other three were equipped with a diesel-hydraulic drive. The two electric observation railcars were ordered by the Reichsbahndirektion München in 1933 and delivered in 1935 with the road numbers elT 1998 and 1999. The Heidelberger Waggonfabrik Fuchs was responsible for building the cars, while the electrical equipment came from AEG Berlin. In 1940, they were renumbered ET 91 01 and ET 91 02. The ET 91 02 was destroyed after a bombing raid on Munich at the Munich main station depot and taken out of service in July 1943.The remaining ET 91 01 remained in service mainly on the electrified line network in southern Germany and Austria until more and more lines of the Deutsche Bundesbahn were gradually electrified. As a result, its range of use was also extended to the north. In addition to day trips, tourist trips lasting several days also became increasingly popular. The "Transparent Train" was also used on the electrified lines of the Swiss Federal Railways and many Swiss private railroads. In the course of its 60 years of service, the ET 91 01 underwent only minor technical changes, such as the electrical equipment on the roof, the headlights and the apron area. However, its appearance was noticeably altered by various paint jobs. An accident on December 12, 1995 finally led to its temporary withdrawal from service. Since its transfer to the Augsburg Railway Park, it has been looked after for museum refurbishment.
