Description

Kres 7403D Signaldienstwagen BR 740 003-9, DB AG, Ep. V (digital, without sound) Product Details

About the model: Kres presents the high-quality DB 740 signal car for Era V. The model impresses with a prototypical appearance with the finest printing and an eye-catching paint scheme. The car also has functional interior lighting and headlights and marker lights that depend on the direction of travel.

About the prototype: In the mid-1950s, the more powerful VT98 with two underfloor engines was developed by Büssing AG from the VT95 rail bus. This not only enabled the DB to respond to the higher passenger volume by attaching two sidecars, but also to combine the powerful two-motor railcar with other railcars as a towing railcar. The resulting differences to the VT95 included the magnetic rail brake, the sleeve buffers and the screw coupling.

A total of 329 railcars, 220 VB 98 sidecars with packing compartment, 100 VB 98 sidecars without packing compartment and 310 VS 98 driving trailers were produced over several construction lots up to 1962, divided between the three manufacturers Uerdingen, MAN and WMD. These vehicles were mostly used by DB in the VT+VB+VS combination. However, there were also shorter two-car units (VT+VS), and occasionally the motor coach (VT) was used alone. Longer sets, up to six-car units, were formed for particularly high passenger volumes.

In 1968, the type number of the railcars was changed to 798, the sidecars were given the numbers 998.0-3 and driving trailers 998.6-9. VT 98/798 was used on the entire DB route network from the North Frisian marshes to the foothills of the Alps, mainly on branch line services, until the year 2000.

At the beginning of the 1990s, DB converted a total of six railcars into signal service cars. They were stationed in Kassel, Fulda, Bruchsal, Kirchhain, Göttingen and Mannheim and used for maintenance and servicing work on points and signal systems, among other things.
