Ballenberg Steam Railway Steam Locomotive HG 3/3
Starting in 1905, the Swiss Federal Railways procured two new HG 3/3 series rack-and-pinion steam locomotives for its Brünig line, which were supplied by SLM Winterthur. After the two prototypes proved themselves very well, a total of 17 of these locomotives were put into service by 1910, with a further locomotive being added in 1926. One of the greatest advantages of these 30-ton locomotives - in addition to their higher output of 400 hp and greater top speed of 40 km/h in friction mode and 13 km/h in cogwheel mode - was that they could also run downhill with the smokebox in front, thus eliminating the time-consuming shunting and turning of the locomotive at the top of the pass on the Brünig. After the electrification of the Brünig Railway in 1941, the steam locomotives became dispensable for regular service, but some of them remained in service as reserves, most recently the locomotives numbered 1065, 1067 and 1068, which were finally retired in 1965. Locomotive 1067 then went to the Ballenberg Steam Railway, where it has been used again since 1972 for nostalgia trips on the Brünig Railway, together with passenger cars BC 28, C 31 and baggage car F 51. Since January 1, 2022, the name of the Brünig Steam Railway museum railroad has been BDB.
