Description

Märklin 39790 steam locomotive BR 78, DB Product Details

Every 78 is somehow different

From 1912, the T 18, in its symmetrical design with three coupled wheelsets, two bogies, large storage tanks and a maximum speed of 100 km/h in both directions, was one of the most successful German tender locomotives. The 78 054, which served as the Märklin prototype, was one of the first deliveries of the T 18. Like almost all machines, it was built in 1916 at the Vulcan works in Stettin and retained the Prussian round roof of the driver's cab until it was taken out of service. During a later general overhaul, however, a newer boiler with three boiler superstructures was installed and so the original appearance of the 78 054 changed, as with many other sister locomotives. The 78 054 entered service as T 18 8411 Erf in the Erfurt directorate at Naumburg depot, where it remained until 1926/27. It then moved to the Hamburg Directorate, first to the Hamburg-Altona depot and by 1936 at the latest to the Hamburg Berl depot. The last change of management took place in March 1948 to Hanover. There it was in service at the Hannover Hgbf depot until 1963, when it was briefly transferred to the Hildesheim depot. However, she was soon assigned to the z position there and retired shortly thereafter on July 1, 1964.
