Märklin 55081 steam locomotive BR 08, DR, Ep. III (incl. sound) Product Details
Quality manufacturer Märklin presents a truly first-class model of the German State Railroad (DR) class 08 steam locomotive that comes with a high-quality mfx decoder and smoke generator with wheel-synchronized steam output, cylinder steam vo/hi, and a steam whistle. The fabulous BR 08 presents itself with an authentic appearance thanks to the highly detailed full metal construction and convinces with first-class features. For example, it has a load-controlled, wheel-synchronized running sound, long-life top lighting with period-correct light coloring and warm white LEDs, a high-quality, two-color firebox flicker, and much more.
After the end of the Second World War, the Schadlokpark of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) of the GDR included a "foreign locomotive" of French origin with the SNCF number 241 A 21. As a development of the French Eastern Railway (EST), it came from a series of 40 machines built in 1931/32 and had a four-cylinder compound power unit. Due to the high cost of maintenance, there were few efforts at the DR to put French-built locomotives back into service. However, the "Coal Dust Collective" around Hans Wendler and Max Baumberg, later head of the Fahrzeug- und Versuchs-Anstalt (FVA) in Halle (from 1960 VES-M Halle), was able to requisition this express locomotive for its needs because of its special design. With its 12.25 m³ combustion chamber and 2,248 mm combustion chamber, it was particularly suitable for conversion to pulverized coal firing, as it had a long burnout path for the dust particles that was desirable for pulverized coal firing. Thus, from September 17, 1951, the 241 A 21 was at the Zwickau "7th October" works and was fitted with a Wendler pulverized coal firing system, reducing its boiler pressure from 20 to 16 kp/cm². The pulverized coal firing system required, among other things, the removal of the ash box and the installation of a second air pump and an additional main air receiver for pneumatic dust discharge. Furthermore, an adaptation to the operating conditions of the DR took place. This included the relocation of the driver's cab from the left to the right side of the locomotive and the extensive fitting of German standard fittings and parts. It was coupled with a 2'2'T28 three-chamber coal dust tender converted from a 2'2'T34 unit tender. The locomotive, now designated 08 1001 by the DR, initially went to the Bw Berlin-Ostbahnhof after its completion in July 1952. Here it was to haul the express train pair D 13/14 to/from Stralsund at the start of the winter timetable on October 5, 1952. The records of locomotive engineer Specht from the Ostbahnhof depot show: On October 8, the engine arrived early from Leipzig and was harnessed in front of the D 13 to Stralsund without being restored. Despite "bad" coal dust, the steam development was good. Like the outward trip, the return trip also went smoothly. Another trip on October 10 also gave no cause for complaint and locomotive engineer Specht noted: "Best steam development. Bunker 2+3 were still about 80 cm full on arrival in Stralsund." After transfer to the FVA Halle in February 1953, intensive test and measurement runs took place, which yielded many new findings. Subsequently, 08 1001 went into scheduled service at Bw Dresden-Altstadt as a Christmas present, so to speak, on December 24, 1953. However, its maintenance-intensive de Glehn power unit, the multi-part crank axle and the general difficulties in procuring spare parts led to its withdrawal from service as early as June 18, 1955. It was not refurbished and was finally withdrawn from service on November 15, 1957.
