The prototype of the BR E 32

The BR E 32 of the German Federal Railroad was one of the first electric locomotives with rod drive that was used for heavy freight train service in the 1930s. Its design and the 1'C1' axle arrangement were similar to steam locomotives, reflecting the transition from steam locomotives to electric locomotives in Germany. The rod drive was a trademark of these machines and contributed significantly to their characteristics. From 1968, the E 32 series was continued in the new numbering as the BR 132, while the E 32 16 remained in service as the last example until the 1980s.
