About the prototype: Starting in 1970, the German State Railroad procured the type Y/B 70 passenger coaches that were further developed from the UIC Y coaches. These were compartment coaches for express train service. Until the 1980s, they were the preferred vehicles for the Berlin - West Germany transit trains and for other international long-distance trains. They were also regularly used on inter-zone trains to West Germany.
