The modern BR 23 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn "outlived" the Prussian P 8 - it was intended as its replacement - by just one year. It had an output of 1,314 kW, weighed 131.8 t and ran at 110 km/h forwards and 85 km/h tender ahead. On 31.12.1971, 76 locomotives were in the maintenance fleet and without exception stationed in three depots (Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern and Crailsheim). After the official decommissioning in December 1975, 8 examples have been preserved for posterity in clubs and museums, some in working order.
