The prototype: E.432 - A pioneer of electrification
In 1927, the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) purchased a total of 40 class E.432 locomotives from the renowned locomotive factory "Società Ernesto Breda". These machines set new standards in electric traction: with a continuous output of 2,200 kW and a weight of 94 tons, they were both powerful and robust. The three-phase locomotives were initially painted black, which was reminiscent of the appearance of steam locomotives.
In the 1950s, the E.432s were often used on the Brenner line in front of international express trains. The machines with the axle formula 1'D1' were an important part of Italian rail traffic until 1976 and were used for both passenger and freight traffic.
