Tams Elektronik 49-01135-01 KSM-3 Return Loop Module for Digital Layouts, Kit
Are you looking for a reliable turn-loop solution for your digital model railroad layout and want to solder the module yourself? The Tams Elektronik 49-01135-01 KSM-3 turnback loop module is designed as a kit and is suitable for digital model railroad layouts of all nominal gauges.
Turnboucles pose a particular challenge in digital operation, as track sections with different polarities can meet at the separation points. The KSM-3 detects the voltage drop as soon as a short circuit is about to occur and switches the polarity within the turnback loop within a few milliseconds.
Low-short-circuit turnback loop module for digital layouts
The module is not completely short-circuit-free, but it minimizes short circuits. This ensures smooth passage over the junction while effectively protecting wheels, pantographs, and rails.
The threshold value for the polarity change depends on the applied track voltage and is individually adjusted via a trimmer potentiometer. An LED aids in precise adjustment and lights up as soon as the optimal threshold value for the respective layout is reached.
Integrated circuit for entry and exit turnouts
The KSM-3 features an additional output for connecting a turnout with a dual-coil drive. The turnout is switched automatically as soon as a locomotive reaches one of the two separation points. At the same time, the polarity change occurs within the turnaround loop.
For motor-driven turnouts, the AMW-1 adapter for motor-driven turnouts is also required. The correct turnout position is permanently assigned to the two separation points, ensuring that manually adjusting the turnout from the outside does not interfere with safe operation.
Suitable for turntables and expanded track layouts
The KSM-3 can also be used with turntables. In this case, the bridge is connected like the inner section of a turnaround loop to compensate for different polarities at the transitions.
For varied operation, the turnaround loop can also be expanded with a shadow station or storage tracks. Get the KSM-3 kit and equip your digital model railroad layout with a well-designed solution for turnaround loops, turntables, and complex track layouts.

- For motor-driven turnouts, the AMW-1 motorized turnout adapter is also required
Procedure:
- Phase 1: Depending on the current turnout position, the locomotive enters the turnaround loop from the left or right
- Phase 2: Upon entering the turnaround loop, the polarity within the loop is reversed—if necessary—upon reaching the junction point after the turnout
- Phase 3: When exiting the turning loop, upon reaching the separation point before the switch, the polarity within the turning loop is reversed and, at the same time, the switch is set correctly for the train’s exit
Notes on layout planning:
- The inner section of the turnaround loop between the two separation points must be at least as long as the longest train that is to pass through the turnaround loop
- The circuit functions even if several trains are inside the turnaround loop at the same time
- This requires that the two separation points not be crossed simultaneously
- Branching tracks within the turnaround loop are possible
- The maximum current for all vehicles within the turnaround loop is 8 A
- This includes the locomotive’s motor current, car interior lighting, and other power consumers
- The turnaround loop can be extended with a hidden station or storage tracks
