This series was the answer to the desire for more powerful locomotives for the narrow gauge lines in Saxony and Thuringia. The Eisfeld-Schönbrunn line in particular benefited from these locomotives. In the 1970s, locomotive 99 0234-7 was fitted with a mixed preheater system, which made it similar in appearance to the new locomotives built in the 1950s. These locomotives were optimized for demanding operation on narrow-gauge lines and set new standards in terms of performance and reliability.

After the closure of some lines in the 1970s, all locomotives of this series were transferred to the Harzquerbahn, where they are still in use today. In the mid-1970s, the engines were converted to oil firing in order to make operation more efficient. However, as early as 1982, after the oil crisis, the conversion to grate firing was reversed. Today, these locomotives are part of the permanent fleet of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways, which has been operating as a private company again since 1993.
