The maximum speed was 80 km/h forwards and 50 km/h in reverse. Some of these already very powerful locomotives saw a further increase in power to 2,100 hp (1,546 kW) when they were converted to oil firing from 1955 onwards. From 1968, the DB oil-fired locomotives had the class designation 043.
